The First Project of its Kind in Al-Barbita
“We started with four pools, and within a term of 6 months we produced four tons of fresh fish” Asmaa said.
Asmaa Qatameen from Al-Barbita – Tafilah, emerged the first project of fish farming, whereupon the idea of the youth emerged to produce special types of Tilapia fish.
In this poverty pocket several ideas crystallized, in terms of the creation by “AZEM” Project which is supported by UNICEF and implemented by BDC, to support the project in an area of 3000 M2 while endowing it with equipment. Asmaa the owner of the project says that “we started with four pools, and placed in them thirteen thousand Thai fish, and within one cycle of 6 months we managed to produce four tons of fish.”
Asmaa who has a Doctor of Pharmacy certificate from the University of Jordan proceeded to find opportunities beyond her specialization.
Asmaa wishes to overcome daily challenges, and regarding the location she said that the availability of the water and the moderation of the weather in wintertime, “are the signs of innovation with ideas which are presently implanted around us in the entire world.”
Asmaa and her partner were able to provide three job opportunities while inclining to broaden the area of the pools to achieve more production to supply the Jordanian market.
Amman -Al Ghad- On the upper plains and in the heart of the valleys is situated the area of Al-Barbita on whose side and between its mountains are the inhabitants of tents and Bedouins and in the middle of the depression which is endowed with fresh water and reed trees and warm mountain climate, emerged the first project of fish farming managed by the youth of Tafilah who are harnessing the geography of the rich land, and turning the ruggedness and difficulty of its land into a springboard for a fish farming project extending in an area of three thousand square meters constituting the biggest fish farming project in Tafilah.
In Al-Barbita where available are important elements such as climate and the availability of water and soil, there prevailed the opportunities for population groupings from among the sons of the Badia where they found the opportunity to foster the traditions of their life in terms of livestock to the arts of agriculture whether vegetables or fruits, but the change of productive patterns has become an urgent need in this valley whereupon the idea of the youth of the area emerged to produce special types of Tilapia fish whose produce reach several governorates.
In this poverty pocket several ideas crystallized, in terms of the creation by “AZEM” Project of a road to support the first project of its kind of fish farming in an area of 3000 M2 while endowing it with equipment and requisites which fulfilled numerous needs and offset a deficiency of hoses and a number of supplies and equipment to expand the size of the pools, so that it is not said that fish on the table of Jordanians is not abundantly present. Asmaa Qatamin the owner of the fish farming project says that “we started with four pools, and placed in them thirteen thousand Thai fish that is of a single type, and within one cycle of 6 months we managed to produce four tons of fresh fish.”
Asmaa who has a Doctor of Pharmacy certificate from the University of Jordan proceeded to find opportunities beyond her specialization, but she had awareness and resolution to harness opportunities. Says she, “there is no ceiling to ambition unless a person believes that this is the extent of his capability, whereupon he will be defeated.”
Asmaa wishes to overcome daily challenges in her work, foremost of which is to reduce energy costs and to incline to solar energy, and to secure electric engines, and Oxygen Equipment to provide oxygen and pumps, and regarding the choice of the location she said that the warmth and availability of the water and the moderation of the weather and temperature in Al-Barbita in wintertime, “are the signs of innovation with ideas which are presently implanted around us in the entire world, and the hundred miles started with one step and the future is ahead of us and we have confidence in ourselves, is the emblem of youth endowed with determination and energy.”
Asmaa and her partner were able to provide three job opportunities while inclining to broaden the area of the pools to achieve more production to supply the Jordanian market with fish and to providing more job opportunities thereby reinforcing the concept of self-employment and creating opportunities from the womb of difficulty and creating a model to be emulated by ambitious youth.
