“The shop became a destination for numerous families and women, and the business witnessed success that exceeded expectations” Shurouq said.

Shurouq Al-Rashaydeh is a housewife in Al-Jafr area who witnessed the daily suffering of the residents in terms of their need for food items. Shurouq departed from her limited experience in the first commercial project, which she established a while ago for selling clothes in a house shop, which enabled her to acquire the necessary experience for managing an additional project in which she found a solution for the scarcity of the services of the mini-market. She decided to found a grocery store in Al-Jafr sealing various kinds of food but the resources were not available, and hence she communicated with “AZEM” Project which is supported by UNICEF and implemented by BDC, upon studying the needs of the residents, agreed to fund the project of establishing a grocery shop. Shurouq says that the shop met with high demand from the residents of the town.  She started two months ago but the success of the project exceeded expectations.

Shurouq departed from her limited experience in the first commercial project, which she established a while ago for selling clothes in a house shop, which enabled her to acquire the necessary experience for managing an additional project in which she found a solution for the scarcity of the services of the mini-market in Al-Jafr area with support from “AZEM” project. Shurouq Al-Rashaydeh is a housewife in Al-Jafr area who did not succumb to the waves of unemployment storming the quarters of the area, and she embarked on doubling her efforts to establish a business bringing daily income which would supplement the income of her spouse and improve her living conditions while creating new job opportunities.

Al-Jafr, with a population of around 7000 people and is affiliated to Al-Jafr district one of the areas of the Maan governorate and is around 60 km away from it, continues to lack sufficient investment and suffers from poor services in the various domains.

Shurouq, resident of Al-Jafr, witnessed the daily suffering of the residents in terms of their need for food items including canned food, frozen products and grains. For a kilogram of sugar a person could be forced to travel a distance of 60 km to the city of Maan to secure this simple need, let alone other goods or stationery, which families may need. Shurouq thought of how to harness this challenge and to convert it into an opportunity for serving her community. She decided to found a grocery store in Al-Jafr sealing various kinds of food but the resources were not available, and so it was necessary to partner and network with the projects close to the poverty pockets, and hence she communicated with “AZEM” Project which, upon studying the Jafr environment and the needs of the residents, agreed to fund the project of Shurouq of establishing a grocery shop.

Shurouq says that the shop met with high demand from the sons and daughters of the town, and there was an additional shop on the same premises for selling clothes. The shop came to represent a destination for numerous families and women, pointing out that she herself sells and buys and secures the merchandise and all the details of the trade process. She started two months ago but the success of the project exceeded expectations.
